Let's talk...Radiation

0

Nuclear-Free-icon[1]With the recent earthquakes and nuclear plant failures in Japan, a new set of worries over radiation is taking over the globe. In my vicinity there are 3 large nuclear plants that if, God forbid, failed would cause the evacuation of 20 million people. Of course, with the evacuation of millions of people radiation exposure is imminent, which brings up a question…How much radiation can the human body take? Well…a lot! To put it this way, in one year we will be exposed to 2.0 mSv* of radiation, a CT Scan will give off 10 mSv per patient, and 50 mSv is the maximum yearly exposure limit set by the US Environmental Protection Agency for workers at a nuclear plant. In other words, you can have up to 5 CT Scans per year before radiation can pose some kind of a hazard to your health. In the case of an unfortunate meltdown, levels of 10,000 mSv are considered the fatal-mark. When the Chernobyl crisis unfolded a level of 50,000 mSv in 10-minutes was measured. Now, how do we get a better understanding of the health-risk associated with radiation? I have attached a chart that pretty much explains the whole ordeal in a very clean way no confusing way. I hope it clears up whatever question you have a about radiation.

* mSv = Milli-Sieverts is the international unit for measuring radiation.

How much damage can an earthquake cause?

0 The answer is a lot. Especially when you consider factors such as the measured scale (the higher the stronger), the location (what type of soil is in the area) and the local infrastructure. To highlight this I have attached a satellite image showing the contrast between what was there before and after an earthquake. The area shown is the region of Qinghai, China. I have also added additional information from Google's Official blog. Normally I would say "Enjoy" after posting something to this blog but I will omit it for this once.
On Tuesday, April 13, a powerful 6.9 earthquake shook the province of Qinghai, China, resulting in widespread destruction and the loss of more than 1,700 lives. Working closely with GeoEye, we’ve been able to acquire some high resolution post-earthquake imagery, which vividly illustrates the magnitude of this tragic event.

New app for the iPhone that blocks the "naughty" in you

0

You must be really slow if you can read this!!!If you grew up in the 80s then you know all about this. Basically you used to type numbers into the calculator, flipped it and it spelled a word. Granted 9 times out of 10 it was a naughty word. Well…someone came up with a “solution” to this “problem” below you’ll find an application, now available in the Apple App Store, that senses what you type and when you flip the iPhone/iPod Touch. At that moment you’ll get a big, fat “CENSORED!” on the screen…bummer!!!
(No link…I can think that anyone would wanna buy this!!!)

Wanna write in green? Scan a leaf…REALLY!!!

4 “Necessity is the mother of invention” and if you’re a graphic artist your “necessities” will be satisfied with this neat lil’ gadget. It’s basically a color scanning pencil that works the following way compliments of Jinsu Park.
  1. You pick an object whose color you want to mimic
  2. The RGB color sensors inside the pen detect the color and then mix the red, green and blue inks inside.
  3. Finally, Voila…you can color that heart you drew on your cute little love letter to your boyfriend.

mommy, what’s that twinkle in the sky?…oh dear is just astronaut urine!!!

0

astronautpeeIf you are star-gazing folk who saw this wonderful spectacle of lights that looked like a comet than I have news for you. What you saw was urine being dumped from the space shuttle Discovery. According to Space.com:

The water dump was a scheduled task for STS-128 pilot Kevin Ford, who poured out urine and waste water stored aboard the shuttle in preparation for a landing attempt Thursday.

Unfortunately I did not see it since where live I can barely see the Lil’ Dipper, the Big Dipper and the lights coming from planes…
